Job-Jan B.'s 1965 Barreiros Dodge Dart 270
Job writes from Amsterdam about his vehicle:
- 1965 Barreiros Dodge Dart 270 4-door
- White (not the original colour, originally it was more beige/tan)
- Red velour seats, bench seat up front with armrest in the middle
- Slant 6 engine (From the later type Barreiros 3700) 3.7 liters/225 cid now runs on petrol and lpg (natural gas). The engine has the Barreiros logo on the intake manifold and a aluminium rockercap. I'm not sure yet what the engineers did to the engine; someone told me it was designed for the less quality fuel availiable in Spain these days, but maybe this isn't true.
- 4-speed manual gearbox (on the floor). Originally it had a 3-speed column shift; the mechanism in the steering column is still intact. Not sure if it's a overdrive box or not.
- It's got some Spanish in the interior -- on the handbrake handle you read the word "FRENC" instead of "BRAKE". On the rearview mirror you find "Dia/Noche" instead of "Day/Night. It also has a speedometer in km/hour instead of miles, and it goes to 180, which looks better that the mileage ones which go up to 120!
- The carpet is dark grey and seems to be original.
- It now has 14" steel wheels with Dodge Charger hubcaps, I still have the original 13" wheel including special Barreiros hubcaps but I had to change to 14" when I put 4-piston Kelsey Hayes disc brakes up front. When I bought the car it did in fact have disc brakes (with the 13" wheels!!). But they were shot and I could not find parts for them, so I had to remove them. Nobody had ever seen these disc brakes -- I'm not sure if they were original, but I'm still looking for info. They had small single (unvented) discs and calipers with 2 large pistons. Also, there was a Bendix Hydrovac unit in the trunk (which is a brake booster not directly attached to the master cylinder) -- not sure if it was in the car originally, but there is Spanish text on it, so I guess it must have been. The car now has a safe dual-reservoir master cylinder.
- I bought an original '65 Dart radio via Ebay, not sure if the Spanish delivered these cars with a different radio.
- Someone once told me these were the most luxurious cars availiable in Spain these days, because General Franco did not allow other cars in the country, but again I'm not sure about this fact.
- I've had the car for about a year now, it was imported from Spain about 8 years ago.
- It's the only '65 Barreiros in Holland, in Spain there are at least 8 left according to a Dodge 3700 driver in Spain.
- Only 1200 were produced in 1965. It also was the first year of production for these cars.
- I'd be glad to chat with anyone who wants to e-mail me.
