Dodge Dart Is 1969 Swinger

DETROIT......Dodge's compact champion, the Dart, will introduce a new model concept, the Swinger, along with its traditional models and series for 1969, according to Robert B. McCurry, Dodge general manager.

The Dart, which will hit the million sales mark in 1969, has proved to be the most sales durable car of the luxury compact field, McCurry said.

Swinger Model

The new "Swinger" model will be aimed directly at the youth market. The Swinger is a low-price, two-door hardtop, and will be available with a wide variety of power plants. The 340-cubic-inch engine of 1968 will be featured in the "Swinger 340". In addition to the 340 engine, Dodge's four-speed floor shift transmission, dual exhaust, heavy-duty rallye suspension, and D70 wide tread tires will be featured.

A special bright red color will be another exclusive for the Dart Swinger 340. Establishing a unique identity will be a performance hood, a "340" nameplate, and its own wide bumble bee stripe.

On Sale In Dealer Showrooms

Slated for public introduction in Dodge dealer showrooms September 19, 1968, the Dart line-up will include five series and nine different models, including the Swinger.

Six engines, from the economy winner 170-cubic-inch Slant Six, to the big 383-cubic-inch Magnum, will be available.

Other engines offered are the 225-cubic-inch Slant Six; 273-cubic-inch V8; the 318-cubic-inch V8 and the previously mentioned 340 CID with four barrel carburetion.

All Dodge Darts will have a new grille, tail light, exterior and interior ornamentation.

Safety

Engineering and safety innovations are again part of the Dart program. An optional tire choice will be the fiberglass belted tire. Two fiberglass belts encircle the tire carcass which increases tread life by as much as fifty percent and provides a reduced rolling resistance which in turn improves fuel consumption.

The new tire is also more puncture resistant than other tires.

Re-positioned door locks along with "non-overriding" door locks will be included in two-door models.

Large side marker reflectors will be standard and head light warning buzzers optional.

New automatic brake adjusters give more even adjustment and greater longevity to linings.

From The Bottom

An economy priced Dart 4-door sedan is a practical vehicle for a young family. The new "Custom" will replace last year's 270 series as a more luxurious family vehicle. The Custom comes with two-door hardtop or four-door sedan in a six or eight series.

The Dart GT, one of the big sellers for Dodge, has either six or V8 engine choice, and will be available in two-door or convertible models.

Described as the "muscle car of the compacts" is the Dart GTS or Dart GT Sport. A leader in the Scat Pack of 1968, this popular series will be another winner in 1969 with either the 340 CID engine or 383 CID engine. Two body styles, the two-door hardtop and convertible, will be produced.

Cleaner Air

Dodge engineers, in a continuing effort to reduce exhaust emissions, have announced an improved Cleaner Air System for the Dart for this model year. By increasing engine operating temperatures, improved carburetion, choke modulation changes, and advanced engine timing, engine emissions are further reduced or maintained while improving the performance and drivability of all engines.

The design changes also improve driveability, simplify service, and reduce some of the underhood complexities.

Wide Appeal

The Dart, on its 111-inch wheelbase, provides sufficient car to provide full-size car comfort, yet retains the compact exterior size. And it maintains a popular price tag.
